Civil society members and students of various city schools on Monday took out an awareness rally against the use of “dangerous” and “killer” Chinese string, which is used for flying kites.
The rally started from Shaheedi Chowk after passing through various markets of Jammu city culminated at the starting point. Students of Tiny Tots High School, Alexandar Memorial High School and Hari Singh Higher Secondary School participated in the awareness rally.
It was flagged off by Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Rashpal Singh and Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), North, Varun Jandial.
The main objective of the rally was to make the public aware of the fatal effects of razor-sharp thread made of nylon, plastic and synthetics using glass and metal, generally known as “Chinese manjha” or “gattu”.
Speaking on the occasion, activist Balvinder Singh, organiser of the rally, said the Chinese string poses a great threat not only to the people flying kites but also to two-wheeler riders and birds. He said the District Magistrate of Jammu had also imposed a ban on procuring, stocking, sale and use of “Chinese manjha”.
