Amritsar, February 17

The Municipal Corporation (MC) has declared its head office at Ranjit Avenue as polythene free zone. The decision has been taken at a recent meeting presided over by MC Joint Commissioner Nitish Singla.

As per the ban orders by the state government, no one can sell and use plastic bags. Ironically, MC employees have been using the same.

Singla instructed the employees to start polythene-free city drive from home. He said that if any employee was found using plastic bag, he or she would be challaned under the Municipal Act.

MC health officials have been instructed to start an intensive drive against the sale and use of the banned plastic products.

“Plastic is a health hazard. The MC has been facing a serious issue to tackle it. Plastic bags are behind choking of the sewage lines. We have to impose the ban orders strictly, he added.

It may be recalled that the state government had banned the use of polythene bags in February 2016.
