Residents of Kothe Sucha Singh Nagar decried the poor state of civic amenities, such as roads, sewerage and drinking water supply in their area.

Situated across the Bathinda lake, the area lacks metal roads and sewerage system, thereby multiplying worries of the residents, especially during the rainy season.

In the absence of proper sewerage system, water accumulated in drains can be seen in almost every street almost throughout the year.

There are 14 streets in the area that has roads built with bricks around 10 years ago, but since then the authorities concerned neither ensured their repairs, let alone carpeting them, said residents.

Hardeep Kaur, a resident of the area, said, “Since there is no proper sewerage system, water from drains often spill on the streets and the entire area starts emanating foul smell. Even garbage is not lifted in a streamlined manner in the area. It can be seen strewn in empty plots for months. The officials concerned are very well aware of the state of civic amenities in the area, but have not taken did any concrete step to ensure development or to conduct repair work for the reasons best known to them.”

Charanpreet Singh, another resident, said, “The brick roads were introduced around 10 years ago and since then no major repair work had been conducted in our area. Prominent leaders from the region visited the area and promised that all civic amenities, including concrete roads, uninterrupted drinking water supply and sewerage system would be established here. But after the elections, nothing has been done.”

Amarjeet Kaur, another resident, said, “Although authorities are stating repair work as reason for not supplying water from the canal, the water supply in our area has been a concern for years now. There are times when for days, there is absolutely no water supply. Now, some area residents have even started installing bore-wells to avoid unnecessary hassles.”

“Sewerage system is another big problem that residents have to face. As there is no proper drainage system, dirty sewage can be seen accumulated in front of houses or streets,” she added.

Mayor Balwant Rai Nath could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
