City girls thrash U’khand 7-1

CHANDIGARH:Kavita and Dhapa scored a brace each as Hockey Chandigarh drubbed Hockey Uttarakhand 7-1 to register their second win in the 9th Hockey India Junior Women National Hockey Championship 2019 (A Division) in Kollam, Kerala, on Monday.

Kavita and Dhapa scored a brace each as Hockey Chandigarh drubbed Hockey Uttarakhand 7-1 to register their second win in the 9th Hockey India Junior Women National Hockey Championship 2019 (A Division) in Kollam, Kerala, on Monday.

Kavita scored the opening goal for Chandigarh in the fifth minute, while Rakhi doubled their lead in the 10th minute. Uttarakhand managed to pull one back in the 13th minute through Prachi Upreti but Chandigarh added five more goals to their tally in the remaining part of the match to seal a comfortable 7-1 win.  

Dhapa struck in the 28th and 29th minutes, while Kavita completed her brace in the 54th minute to make it 5-1 for Chandigarh.  

Kamlesh and captain Sonu then shut the door on Uttarakhand with successive strikes in the 58th minute.  

Chandigarh girls have now accumulated seven points from four matches and can make it to the quarterfinals if they beat Sports Authority of India in their final Pool B match.

Earlier in the day, Hockey Punjab rode on Harpreet Kaur’s impressive show to beat The Mumbai Hockey Association Ltd 11-0.

Harpreet (14th, 33rd, 43rd, 47th, 60th) struck five times for Punjab, while Baljinder Kaur (3rd, 30th) and Gurkamalpreet Kaur (58th, 59th) scored a brace each. Rozy Bharti (7th) and Amandeep Kaur (31st) added a goal each to the Punjab tally. 

In Pool C, Hockey Himachal registered their first win of the competition as they beat Hockey Andhra Pradesh 5-1. 

Tannu (16th), captain Arti Kashyap (23rd), Shweta (43rd), Deepali (54th) and Radha (57th) scored for Himachal, while Vara Lakshmi Uppidi (5th) scored the solitary goal for Andhra Pradesh.

In the last match of the day, Hockey Karnataka drubbed Hockey Bihar 6-0 and stayed in contention for a quarterfinal berth. 

SD Sandhya (20th, 43rd), S Yuktha (21st, 23rd), Kadambhari SM (6th) and SK Sumalatha (33rd) contributed to Karnataka tally.
