City girls go down fighting to J’khand

CHANDIGARH:Hockey Chandigarh went down fighting to Hockey Jharkhand in the 9th Hockey India Junior Women National Hockey Championship 2019 (A Division) quarterfinals in Kollam, Kerala, on Thursday.

Hockey Chandigarh went down fighting to Hockey Jharkhand in the 9th Hockey India Junior Women National Hockey Championship 2019 (A Division) quarterfinals in Kollam, Kerala, on Thursday. The side lost 4-5 to bow out of the competition.     

Jharkhand took a two-goal lead inside six minutes, but Chandigarh girls made a strong comeback to overturn the lead in the next 32 minutes and go ahead 3-2.  

Jharkhand though utilised their chances in the last quarter to win the match 5-4.

Albela Toppo (3rd, 6th) scored a brace, while Priya Dungdung (39th), Beauty Dungdung (52th) and captain Reshma Soreng (55th) added a goal each to the Jharkhand tally. Kavita (28th, 43rd), Monu (12th) and Rakhi (38th) scored for Chandigarh.

In the second quarterfinal, Uttar Pradesh blanked Hockey Maharashtra 3-0. 

Haryana, meanwhile, prevailed 2-1 over Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy in the quarters. Anu (8th) and captain Amandeep Kaur (34th) scored a goal each for Haryana, while Sadhna Sengar (30th) struck for MP academy. 

In the last quarterfinal, Hockey Mizoram beat Hockey Odisha 3-0. — TNS
