Patiala, February 15

Amid the ongoing tussle between the state government and contractual teachers over the 60 per cent cut in the monthly salary, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has denied any cut from their end in the salaries.

In fact, the ministry, in a RTI reply, stated that “the Government of India issues no instructions regarding the increase or decrease in salaries of teachers/staff”.

With this denial, the MHRD has put the state government, who had been blaming the MHRD for the cut all along, in a tight spot.

Earlier, the ministry had also denied the state government’s claim of delay of funds from the Union government.

Replying a query on a cut in the salaries of the teachers, under the Samagara Shiksha scheme, the HRD Ministry said: “The Government of India provides fund to the state to support the education sector, which also includes the salaries of the teachers as per the approvals by the Project-Approval-Board (PAB). However, over and above the approvals of the PAB, the expenditure is borne by respective states.”

Under the scheme, contractual teachers are said to be getting a pay of Rs 37,000 (primary) and Rs 42,000 (upper primary).
