Cell phones seized from jail inmates

Hoshiarpur: During a surprise inspection at the local Central Jail, two mobile phones were seized from inmates. In a complaint sent to the city police station, Assistant Jail Superintendent Desraj said during a surprise inspection at Barrack No. 23, two mobiles phones were recovered from undertrials. The phones were seized from Manjit Singh of Garhdiwala and Harminder Singh, alias Sonu, of Binjhon village. The police have lodged an FIR under the Prisons Act against the duo. oc

Mass marriages organised

Phagwara: The Sarab Naujwan Sabha, Phagwara, headed by Sukhwinder Singh, organised mass marriages of 12 needy couples at a colourful function here on Thursday. Additional Director, Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur, Yurinder Singh Hayer, was the chief guest while Pawan Beesla, Superintending Engineer, PSPCL, was the honorary guest  who blessed the newly-wed couples. Former minister Joginder Singh Maan and NRI Bhupinder Singh were among those others present. It was the 29th mass marriage function organised by the sabha in Phagwara. OC

Rs 50-L grant for housing scheme

Phagwara : The Union Government has sent a grant to the tune of Rs 50 lakh under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to the Municipal Corporation, Phagwara. This was stated by Mayor Arun Khosla in a press release issued here on Friday. Khosla said Union Minister of State Som Parkash would soon distribute the grant among beneficiaries. The Centre had earlier sent Rs 80 lakh in two instalments, while Rs 8 crore would be sent to Phagwara under the scheme. OC

Free cataract surgeries in UT

Chandigarh: An NGO has started a free mega camp for eye surgeries that will go on till November 13 in Chandigarh to mark the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. Guru Ka Langar Eye Hospital, Sector 18-B, Chandigarh, will perform 550 eye cataract surgeries with phaco technique, 55 surgeries of retina and 55 cornea transplants. As many as 550 injections of avastin will also be administered to patients. In addition to eye treatment, 55 free dentures will also be given to the needy. The OPD registration time is from 8 am to 10 am. OC

Man arrested with ‘ganja’

Phagwara: The police seized 6 kg of  ganja from a person on Thursday. The suspect, Santosh Yadav, is a resident of Bihar. A case has been registered. OC
