Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot today announced setting up of a heinous crime case monitoring unit to deal with very serious crimes that result in erosion of public confidence.
Gehlot lamented previous BJP government’s ‘carelessness’ that led to loopholes in the Pehlu Khan lynching case and clean chit to all six accused.
Supervised by the ADGP-Crime, the unit will comprise an IG, DIG, two SP-rank officers, and two law officers to monitor the status of such cases up to the court proceedings, Gehlot said after holding a meeting of Home Department, which was attended by top police officers.
The unit will be supported by every police range, including the police commissioner and SP office of the district, Gehlot said. An FIR would have to be compulsorily lodged if a person approached a police station, else the SP office would order lodging of a case, the CM, who holds the Home Ministry, said.
On the Pehlu lynching case, Gehlot alleged: “It was the sheer carelessness of the previous BJP government that changed the IO (investigation officer) thrice, which led to loopholes in the investigation and chargesheet. As a result, the court gave the benefit of the doubt to the six accused.”
When asked about BJP’s demand for a CBI probe into another alleged lynching of a man in Alwar’s Bhiwadi and suicide by his father recently, Gehlot asked the Opposition party not to make it a political issue. “Our government is committed to giving justice to every one regardless of caste, creed and religion,” the CM replied, in an indirect jibe at the BJP for raising demand over a case involving Hindu victims.
