A day after the police arrested two gangsters suspected of carjacking at gunpoint from Seona village here, SSP Mandeep Singh Sidhu has initiated a departmental inquiry against Tripuri SHO Rajesh Malhotra.

This is after residents of the area alleged the officer failed to act against rowdy youth staying at a house in Ranjit Nagar despite repeated complaints. The police have, meanwhile, released 11 other youths who were taken into custody on Saturday.

The police said the two gangsters had been staying in a PG in Ranjit Nagar for the past few days. Three of their accomplices, including gangster Nav Lahoria, managed to flee from the spot. The police later took 11 youths into custody for investigations, who were handed over to their families on Sunday.

Police officials said people of the area complained that they had informed the SHO in Tripuri about rowdy youth who created ruckus after consuming alcohol. They said the officer failed to act on their complaints.

The SSP gave directions to all station house officers in the district to keep an eye on activities in their areas. He said, “We will inquire into why the SHO failed to act against the youth after receiving complaints from the people. Strict action will be initiated against any police officer found guilty in the case.

Insiders said two of the youths were related to police officers in the district, including an SHO posted in Sangrur and an ASI posted in Patiala.

Senior police officers said parents should take care of their children. They said, “Parents should know the whereabouts of their children as paying fee is not their only duty. We will check call records of the youth and they will be summoned to join the investigation if need be.”

The police said the district administration had repeatedly directed people to inform them about the youths staying in their PGs. They said, “We will also initiate action against those who fail to submit information about youths staying in their PGs. It is mandatory for all house owners to submit the details from time to time.”
