The approval of a police checkpost at Sadwan on the Nurpur-Chamba link road by the state Cabinet at its meeting on Tuesday has fulfilled the long-standing demand of residents of 10 gram panchayats in the Suliali belt.
The Cabinet has also given its nod for the creation of seven posts for this police check post. The new checkpost is likely to check burgeoning drug inflow from neighbouring Punjab into this area.
The demand was raised by local MLA Rakesh Pathania before the Chief Minister during his maiden visit in Nurpur in March last year. The Nurpur-Chamba road is connected with Punjab border in Suliali gram panchayat. The inter-state route is considered a safe passage for drugs by peddlers having inter-state connection.
The residents of surrounding 10 gram panchayats had been raising the demand for a police checkpost at Sadwan for the past many years, but successive governments failed to take any step in this direction.
With the Cabinet approval for a new police checkpost on the Himachal-Punjab border, the demand of a district police office (SP office) has started gaining momentum. Recently, Pathania also raised this demand before the Chief Minister during his visit at Nurpur for which the Chief Minister had assured that the state government was reviewing the issue seriously. The district police can cater to the need of four subdivisions Nurpur, Indora, Jawali and Fatehpur in the lower Kangra areas.
The elected representatives of the surrounding gram panchayats have welcomed the Cabinet decision. Meanwhile, local MLA Rakesh Pathania has thanked Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur for according the Cabinet nod to a new police checkpost in Nurpur.
