Ludhiana, October 18

Deputy Commissioner Pardeep Kumar Agrawal and Deputy Director of the Animal Husbandry Department Dr GS Toor have clarified that as per the Supreme Court orders of May 7, 2014, holding bullock cart races is banned.

They said there were reports that bullock cart and dog races were being organised during the rural sports festivals in some villages of Ludhiana district.

They added that the dog races could be organised only under the supervision of Punjab Government’s managing committee and following rules formulated by the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals under Section 3(2) of the Prevention of Cruelty to the Animals (Establishment and Regularisation of Societies for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Rules 2001).

The DC has appealed to the organisers of the rural sports festivals to follow the rules and remain vigilant regarding bullock cart and dog races.

They said violation of any order and rule would attract strict penal action. — TNS
