Mandi, February 11

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has started the snow-clearance operation in the tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti on Sunday to connect main roads of the valley with the district headquarters at Keylong.

The BRO has cleared snow up to Satingri from Keylong. A BRO official said that it would take some time to connect Keylong with Sissu and Darcha.

All 134 roads in the district had been blocked due to heavy snowfall since February 6 and people of the region were finding it hard to move from one place to another.

The Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB) has restored power generation in the district’s Thirot project

Pravesh Thakur, Chief Engineer, HPSEB, Mandi, said that power supply had been restored up to Karga in the region. “We will soon restore power supply in Keylong and Udaipur,” he said.

He said that power supply had been restored in major parts of Mandi and Kullu districts which were reeling under darkness for the past a few days. “Our workers are facing a major challenge in Lahaul and Spiti in restoring power supply due to lack of transportation facility. The workers are moving on foot in heavy snow to repair power lines,” he added.

An 85-year-old man fell from the roof of his house while clearing snow at Tino village, nearly 15 km from Keylong. The victim suffered serious injuries, but the road leading to the village was blocked and he would be airlifted to Kullu from the nearby helipad, said Lahaul-Spiti DC Ashwani Kumar Chaudhari. — TNS
