Surat: The third women’s T20 International between India and South Africa was abandoned, without a ball being bowled due to heavy downpour here today. Persistent rain meant even the toss could not take place. India lead the five-match series 1-0. The fourth T20I is scheduled here on Tuesday.

Hazare Trophy: Chhattisgarh continue winning run   

Chhattisgarh continued their winning run in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, beating Andhra by 56 runs in the Elite Group A game here today. Asked to bat first, Chhattisgarh, who had stunned defending champions Mumbai yesterday, crawled to 268/9 in 50 overs. Chhatisgarh bowlers then kept taking wickets at regular intervals and the Andhra innings folded at 212. Meanwhile, rain washed out all Group B matches in Vadodara.

Haryana’s Sajan wins gold, in team for U-23 Worlds  

Sajan Bhanwal, the only Indian to win two junior World Championships medals, expectedly earned a place in the country’s Greco-Roman team for the Under-23 World Championships by emerging as the champion in the Nationals. Sajan won gold in the 77kg for Haryana, which finished third in the team championship. With four gold, two silver and three bronze medals, Services took the team championship. Arjun (55kg), Rajeet (63kg), Rahul (72kg) and Deepak (130kg) won gold for Services. Delhi finished second.

Indian junior boys win bronze in TT tourney    

Indian junior boys Raegan Albuquerque and Yashansh Malik paired with Netherlands’ Lode Hulshof to win the bronze medal at the Serbia Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Open. The team lost 2-3 in the semifinals to the Czech Republic.

Kaushal wins Maldives International Challenge   

Indian shuttler Kaushal Dharmamer clinched the men’s singles title at the Maldives International Challenge with a 21-13 21-18 win over Siril Verma here today. In the women’s doubles final, Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy lost 10-21 21-17 12-21 to Japan’s Sayak Hobara and Natsuki Soni. Saipratheek Krishnaprasad and Ashwini Bhat finished second in the mixed doubles category, while Arun George and Sanyam Shukla lost in the men’s doubles final.

Malvika beats Gayatri to win title

India’s Malvika Bansod beat compatriot Gayatri Gopichand 21-14 21-18 to win the women’s singles event at the Annapurna International Super Series here today. The 18-year-old Bansod defeated national coach Pullela Gopichand’s 16-year-old daughter in 42 minutes. Swarnaraj Bora of India lost the men’s singles final to Seng Zoe Yeoh of Malaysia 19-21 8-21. India’s Saurabh Sharma and Rohan Kapoor won the men’s doubles event. Agencies

Bekele misses marathonworld record by a whisker

Former Olympics and world champion Kenenisa Bekele staged a thrilling comeback to win the Berlin marathon today, dramatically missing out on the world record by two seconds after recording the second fastest time ever. Ethiopian Bekele finished in two hours, one minute and 41 seconds, agonisingly close to Eliud Kipchoge's world record time despite a full sprint in the final 400m. Legese took second place in 2:02:48, while Lemma was third, another 48 seconds behind.

The English Football Association is to investigate complaints about offensive chants that were made during Manchester United's Women's Super League clash against Liverpool. Liverpool flagged up the chants from a section of United home fans in a post-match report.

Nigerian pair cleared to race in 200m after confusion   

Nigerian pair Divine Oduduru and Blessing Okagbare have been reprieved after an apparent bureaucratic mixup and will race in the men's and women's 200 metres races respectively at the world athletics  championships. The pair were both entered in the 100 metres even though they had said they did not intend to take part. Under IAAF rules, they were then barred from the rest of the competition for failing to turn up for the races.

Defoe involved in car crash but not seriously injured    

English footballer Jermain Defoe was involved in a car crash after Scottish side Rangers' win against Aberdeen at Ibrox on Saturday but was not seriously injured in the collision, the club confirmed. Defoe came in as a substitute and scored as Rangers beat Aberdeen 5-0. Agencies
