Ludhiana: The members of 108 Ambulance Employees’ Union staged a dharna on Saturday.  Gurpreet Singh, state union president, said: “The company is making employees work for 12 hours, against 8 hours, for the past several years against rules. No increment has been given to them for the past one year. In case any mistake is committed by any employee, they are either suspended or transferred. We have decided to sit on dharna on September 16 in Amritsar. In case our demands are not met, we will be forced to withdraw the ambulance services.”  TNS

Barwala resident commits suicide

Sahnewal: A farmer of Barwala village committed suicide at his home and later breathed his last at a hospital in Doraha. Ramandeep Kaur, his wife, named four persons, who, she alleged, were responsible for forcing him to commit suicide. A suicide note, naming the four, has also been recovered from his home. Gurdeep Singh of Barwala village consumed poison as result of which he started vomiting and was admitted to a local hospital in Doraha. His wife said Balwinder Singh, Gurjit Singh, Kulwinder Singh and Gurdeep Singh of Barwala village were responsible for him taking such an extreme step.  IO Randhir Singh said there seems to be a monetary dispute. The four named in the FIR are being searched for and they shall be arrested soon. OC

Two MC officials put in papers

Ludhiana: The civic body is already struggling with staff shortage and to make things worse, two key officials have decided to quit their job. MC senior veterinary officer Dr YP Singh filed his resignation. Besides, Balwinder Singh, executive engineer (lights wing), has applied for his retirement under the voluntary scheme.  MC Superintendent Manoj Kumar said the case of voluntary retirement of XEN Balwinder Singh has been sent to the government. He said Dr YP Singh, who is on contractual basis, has also filed his resignation. Senior Deputy Mayor Sham Sundar Malhotra said: “Dr YP Singh claimed to have filed resignation by citing personal reasons. Besides, I have no information if XEN Balwinder Singh applied for voluntary retirement.” TNS

Block Samiti office-bearers take charge

Khamano: Newly-elected chairperson Jasmeet Kaur and vice-chairman Dr Narinder Kumar Sharma of Khamano Block Samiti took over the charge of their office on Friday in the presence of Bassi Pathana MLA Gurpreet Singh and two other MLAs, apart from local leadership of the Congress party. MLA GP, Khanna MLA Gurkirat Singh Kotli and Payal MLA Lakhvir Singh Lakha Payal congratulated the newly-elected office-bearers. — OC

Food samples collected

Ludhiana: A team of the Health Department comprising designated officer Dr Andesh Kang and Food Safety Officer Yogesh Goyal, along with the Samrala police, intercepted a vehicle coming from Fatehgarh Sahib district and took sample of paneer and cream. The team also inspected karyana shops of nearby village, Samrala tehsil, and took sample of desi ghee and cooking medium. The team also inspected a hotel in Samrala and took samples of curd and paneer. All samples have been sent to the state lab. TNS

LIP forms social media teams 

Ludhiana: The Lok Insaaf Party (LIP) has formed social media teams for various districts of the state. These teams will campaign and share activities of the party on social media platforms to get support from the people. Navpreet Singh Tung has been appointed party’s social media wing (Ludhiana) in charge. TNS

State-level convention 

Ludhiana: A state-level convention was organised at Punjabi Bhawan in which hundreds of activists from various districts, namely Ludhiana, Patiala, Chandigarh, Mohali and Ropar, participated. It was attributed to veteran communist leader, freedom fighter and well-known kisan leader Jagjit Singh Lyallpuri, who devoted his life for the cause of peasantry, working class and downtrodden exploited people of society. Dr Navdeep Khera, son of Lyallpuri, also participated. On the occasion, the anti-people policies of the state government and the Centre were discussed. Demand charter was also distributed among the participants which included demands of workers, peasants and all sections of society. It also opposed the policies of liberalisation, privatisation, and imperialist globalisation. It also opposed the policies of corporatisation and opening of key sectors of Indian economy such as defence, railways, health and others. The leaders demanded restoration of Article 370 and 35 A in Kashmir. Later, they announced that the party will hold a dharna at Jantar Mantar on November 25. TNS
