CHANDIGARH: In a hit-and-run, an 11-year-old girl died while her mother was injured after they were knocked down by an unknown car near Sector 52 here on Sunday night. The complainant, Sunita (38) of Sector 52, reported that she was returning home along with her two children, Neeraj (16) and Monika (11), when a car hit her and her daughter near a bridge on the road separating Sector 51 and 52. The injured were rushed to the hospital where Monika died. The police said the accident was reported around 9.45 pm. Since it was dark, the complainant could not note down the registration number of the car. TNS

Rain may intensify from tomorrow

Theft at house in Maloya

Chandigarh: A theft was reported from a house in Maloya. According to the police, the complainant, Om Parkash, stated that an unknown person stole Rs 50,000, a mobile phone and jewellery worth around Rs 35,000 from his house on the intervening night of August 7 and 8. TNS

Wall collapse: Two booked

Chandigarh: The police have booked two persons on a complaint of the wife of a retired Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice. According to the police, complainant Racchpal Kaur Bains, wife of Ajit Bains, a resident of house number 27, Sector 3, reported that the wall of her house collapsed due to construction work carried out at house number 25 by her neighbour Balraj Singh and a building contractor. The police have registered a case under Sections 336 (act endangering the life or personal safety of others) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the IPC at the Sector 3 police station. Kirron meets govt employees

Chandigarh: Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher met a delegation of the UT Government Employees Housing Welfare Society on Monday and assured them that the issue regarding the rates of flats will be resolved by Home Minister Amit Shah. The delegation apprised her of their hardships. “The MP gave us a patient hearing. She said she would get flats built at affordable rates as promised during the elections,” Dr Dharmender, said general secretary of the union. He said not even a single employee has given his or her consent to the new rates announced by the CHB earlier. TNS

Couple injured in road mishap 

Kharar: A couple was knocked down by a rashly driven tractor near Khizrabad village on Monday evening. The victims have been identified as Hardev Singh and his wife Manjit Kaur, who were travelling on a two-wheeler when the accident took place.  According to information, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Parminder Kumar of Majari police station said the duo was going on a two-wheeler and were knocked down by a tractor on Khizrabad-Bindrakh road. He said both the victims were rushed to the PGI, Chandigarh, by  the traders. The police have started the investigation. OC

Kharar MC sans senior vice-prez

Kharar: The elections to the post of senior vice-president in the Kharar Municipal Council have been due from the last one year. The said post has been lying vacant from August 18, 2018.  Rajesh Sharma, Executive Officer, Kharar MC, said they had written to the Deputy Commissioner about fixing the date. The Congress has a two-third majority in the Kharar civic body. The tenure of the present MC would end on March 7 next year. OC

I-Day Cup final tomorrow

Chandigarh: The team of Kulbeer Brar and Bhupinder Toor will play against Angad Sangha and Col Mohan Singh in the final of the Independence Day Cup Golf Tournament — one of oldest tournaments of the Chandigarh Golf Club — on August 14. The tournament is played on a team match-play format over a period of three months, with the final being traditionally held a day prior to the Independence Day. TNS

Udhav helps NWCA win

Panchkula: A quick-fire half-century by Udhav Jindal (65 off 47 balls) helped Narinder Walia Cricket Academy (NWCA) beat Panchkula Stars XI by 98 runs in a Summer Cup match here on Monday. Batting first, NWCA rode on Jindal’s 47-ball 65 to score 169/5 in 25 overs. Aasees Bawa made 45, while Lakshay Yadav added 25 runs to the NWCA total. Saksham was the most effective bowler for Stars Xi, claiming 2/31. In reply, Panchkula Stars were all out for 72 runs in 21 overs. Suraj took 3/9 for NWCA, while Arnav (2/25), Madhav (2/12) and Sahil Pujara (2/12) bagged two wickets each. Arnav (20) was the top scorer for Stars XI. TNS

Gulshan takes NCC to victory

Chandigarh: Gulshan Kumar scored an unbeaten century to guide Namaste Chandigarh Complex (NCC) XI to a 56-run win over Adda’s Cricket XI in a My Country - My Love Cricket Tournament match here on Monday. Put in to bat, NCC, aided by Gulshan’s unbeaten 108, managed 176/7 in 20. Vineet made 34 runs. Harshul claimed two wickets. In reply, Adda’s Cricket XI could only manage 121/7 in the allotted overs. Harshul made 28 runs, while Vikram contributed 26 runs to the chase. For NCC, Pradeep took two wickets, while Bhanu bagged one wicket each. TNS
