Anirban Lahiri carded a 3-under 67 followed by a flawless 7-under 65 at the 36-hole sectional qualifier here to qualify for his third US Open. The 31-year-old first carded a 67, with seven birdies and four bogeys, at the par-70 Scioto Country Club. He then shot a superb 65, which included seven birdies, at the par-72 Brookside. Lahiri was second behind Luke Guthrie. “It doesn’t feel good to watch Majors from home. I’m hungry to play well in the big events,” Lahiri said.

Siddhi takes lead in national under-7 chess
Siddhi Rao of Karnataka conquered overnight leader Sreekarthika Velmurugan of Tamil Nadu to take sole lead after Round 7 of the 33rd National U-7 Open and Girls’ Chess Championship in Kolkata. In the boys’ section, Siddhant Bharati of Maharashtra, Sri Akhil Prasad from Andhra Pradesh and Kiran Shah of Gujarat lead at 6.5.

Defying WA, IOA says AAI polls will be held on June 9
The Indian Olympic Association said it was not intimidated by World Archery’s threats to suspend Archery Association of India and insisted that the AAI elections would be held on June 9 as per schedule. World Archery had warned AAI of “immediate suspension” if the two factions went ahead with two separate elections in New Delhi and Chandigarh on June 9. Anand finishes joint eighth in blitz
Stavanger (Norway): Viswanathan Anand finished joint eighth in the blitz phase of the Altibox Norway chess tournament. He will face reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen in the first round of the classical format. While the blitz scores are not counted in the main tournament, they affect the number of white games that a player can get. Anand will get four white games, while the top five finishers in blitz will get five white games in the 10-player tournament. The blitz tournament was won by Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. PTI
