‘Cops intimidating counting agents

Ropar: A day before counting, SAD (Taksali) candidate from Anandpur Sahib Bir Devinder Singh alleged that the police were intimidating his counting agents. He alleged that a police official visited one of his counting agents Jagjit Singh at Kalheri village and tried to intimidate him on Wednesday.

Electrician electrocuted

Abohar: Balraj Singh (36), a private electrician and resident of Dharam Nagari here, was electrocuted as he accidently touched high tension electricity wires that were passing over a house at Dalmirkhera village. He was offloading an air-conditioner from the rooftop for annual maintenance, the house owner said. OC

Six nabbed for gambling

Abohar: Six persons were arrested and Rs 1.75 lakh seized from them as the Sriganganagar police raided a house in Vivekananda Colony on Tuesday night. Station House Officer Rajesh Sihag today said the raid was conducted on a tip-off that the house was being used for gambling. The accused were identified as Jeetu Khan, Anwar, Sohan Lal Sonu, Deepak Arora, Vicky and Deepak Sindhi. OC

Ex-cop booked for torture

Abohar: A case was registered against Anoop Singh, who had retired on superannuation of service from the Punjab Police, under Sections 323, 325 and 166 of the IPC following court orders on Wednesday. Complainant Surja Ram of Mehrana village was arrested in connection with a clash in the village. As he reportedly tried to flee from custody, he fell and suffered injuries. However, the then Head Constable, Anoop Singh, allegedly tortured him after his arrest. OC

Illicit liquor seized

Abohar: A day before the counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections, the police on Wednesday nabbed Paramjit Singh of Seed Farm Colony with 150 bottles of illicit liquor that he was carrying on motorcycle on a link road. A case under the Excise Act was registered. OC

Two commit suicide

Abohar: Dharam Pal (26), a small-time farmer of Chak 23GB village in Sriganganagar, allegedly ended his life by jumping before a train on Tuesday. His father-in-law Veeru Ram was booked under Section 306 of the IPC on Wednesday as Puran Ram, brother of the deceased, alleged that Dharam Pal ended life due to harassment by in-laws. In Burjwala village, a teenager ended life by taking poison on Wednesday. His parents said he was upset after he failed in the annual exam for Class IX. OC

Two killed in accident

Sangrur: Two Malerkotla residents were killed when the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a vehicle on the Malerkotla-Nabha road on Wednesday. The SHO, Amargarh police station, Harmanpreet Singh Cheema, said the deceased had been identified as Mohammad Shakeel and Mohammad Sagar. TNS
