Rahane to lead Mumbai in Mushtaq Ali Trophy

Mumbai: Ajinkya Rahane will lead the Mumbai team in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the domestic T20 tournament, which will be played in Indore from February 21 to 28.

Ajinkya Rahane will lead the Mumbai team in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the domestic T20 tournament, which will be played in Indore from February 21 to 28. The squad also includes young opening batsman Prithvi Shaw, who will be returning to competitive cricket after sustaining an ankle injury during a practice game in Australia in November. Other batting regulars like Shreyas Iyer, Siddhesh Lad, Surya Kumar Yadav, and experienced wicketkeeper-batsman Aditya Tare have made it to the squad.

The CCI, an affiliated unit of BCCI, is home to the iconic Brabourne Stadium and has hosted many Test matches. Khan has twice played for Pakistan against India at the Brabourne Stadium.

ISL: Pune dent Jamshedpur’s playoff chances with 4-1 win
FC Pune City produced a clinical display to beat Jamshedpur FC 4-1 in their Indian Super League clash. Robin Singh (17th and 65th minutes), Marcelinho (45th) and Ashique Kuruniyan (70th) found the target for Pune while Carlos Calvo (76th) scored a consolation goal from the penalty spot for Jamshedpur who slumped to their first defeat of the season at home.

I-League: Bagan steal win against Aizawl 
A late goal by Bikramjit Singh helped Mohun Bagan beat Aizawl FC 2-1 on Saturday, ensuring at least a top-six finish in the I-League. Uganda’s Henry Kisekka put the away side ahead in the 22nd minute before former Bagan man Ansumana Kromah drew Aizawl level at the half-hour mark. Defender Bikramjit sealed three points with a 78th-minute strike. Bagan are sixth with 26 points from 17 games. Gokulam Kerala FC’s winless run got extended to three months after Indian Arrows held the hosts to a 1-1 draw in Kozhikode. Gokulam are 10th with 13 points, while Arrows are seventh with 17 points.

Mahilpur boys blank Phagwara’s GN College 3-0
FA Mahilpur stunned GN College, Phagwara, 3-0 on the second day of the 57th All-India Principal Harbhajan Singh Memorial (College and Club) Football Tournament, at SGGS College, Mahilpur. Jagmeet Singh netted the first goal in the 15th minute. Gurvir Singh doubled the lead in the 34th minute. In the first minute of the second half, Mangal Ram scored the third goal. In the second match, Sikh National College, Banga, logged a 3-1 win against FA Baddon (U-19). In the 20th minute, Arshvir Singh scored the first goal for Banga. However, just seven minutes later, Vipan Kumar scored the equaliser. In the 40th minute, Manraj Singh again put Banga ahead and Ajay Kumar scored the third goal in the 76th minute.

Mertens stuns Halep to win Qatar Open title         
Belgium’s Elise Mertens rallied from a set down to beat top seed Simona Halep 3-6 6-4 6-3 and clinch her first Premier-level title at the Qatar Open. Mertens, ranked 21 in the world, recorded three top-10 victories in Doha this week, also beating Kiki Bertens and Angelique Kerber in the quarters and semis, respectively. — Agencies
