Chandigarh: Kanwar Pal, Speaker, Vidhan Sabha, administered the oath of office and secrecy to newly elected MLA of Jind Krishan Middha here on Wednesday. Interacting with mediapersons after the swearing-in ceremony, the Speaker said that now the number of BJP MLAs in the Vidhan Sabha has increased to 48. Middha said that during the four-and-a-half year tenure of the BJP government, there had been overall development in Jind. TNS

Man gets 10-yr RI for raping minor

Chandigarh: The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge, Sirsa, has sentenced Govind Singh (22), a resident of Sirsa district, to 10-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) for raping a minor girl. It also imposed a fine Rs 30,000 on the convict. The case dates back to June 8, 2017, when Govind fled with a minor girl to Rajasthan. He raped her there and fled. When the girl reached back to her village, a case was registered. TNS

5 poachers held, 8 carcasses seized  

Sonepat: A team of Wildlife Department apprehended five poachers on Wednesday and seized eight carcasses from them. On information sent by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, Delhi, a team of the department raided fields at Tikola village in the district.  The seizure included five civet cats, a jackal, a hare, a jungle cat, four wooden mounted spears, 34 leg-hold traps, two motorcycles and a moped. Two persons go missing in Pehowa 

Kurukshetra: Two persons have reportedly gone missing in separate cases in Pehowa subdivision of the district. A resident of Harigarh Bhorik village, 22-year-old Sunil Kumar is missing since Monday. He is an apprentice with the Haryana Roadways. In a complaint, Sunil’s father Suresh Kumar said his son had left home for work but did not return. In another case, Dalbir Singh of Puja Colony in Pehowa is missing since January 24. A police spokesperson said the cases were being investigated. TNS

Karnal man arrested for drug peddling  

Kurukshetra: The district police have arrested a man on charge of drug peddling. A police spokesperson said 1.5-kg ganja was recovered from Karamjit Singh of Samana Bahu village in Karnal. The accused was arrested by a police team near Samani Bahu village near here. TNS

KU bags trophy in youth festival

Kurukshetra: Kurukshetra University has bagged the overall trophy in dance at the 34th inter-university national youth festival for the third consecutive time. The event was held at Chandigarh University, Mohali, from February 1-5. A total of 36 universities took part. A KU spokesperson said on Wednesday that a 40-member contingent of KU participated in and won a position in each event. TNS

NHM staff strike extended by 2 days 

Ambala: On Wednesday, the National Health Mission (NHM) employees, who were on a two-day strike, extended their strike by two more days. As many as 263 NHM employees were on strike in Ambala on Wednesday. They are demanding regularisation of jobs, amendment in service bylaws, job security, clearance of pending dues and an end to the outsourcing policy. TNS

Over 80 vehicle drivers challaned 

Sonepat: More than 80 vehicle drivers were challaned by Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Sonepat, Prashant Pawar for not using seat belts and not wearing helmets during an hour-long special checking at the main entrance of the local mini secretariat on Tuesday. OC

Restore bus service, demand students

Kaithal: Students studying in various educational institutions in Siwan, 10 km from here, have urged Deputy Commissioner Dharamvir Singh to direct the Transport Department to ensure regular bus service between Siwan and Kaithal, so that they can attend their classes in time. They said earlier, there was a direct Haryana Roadways bus service between Kaithal and Siwan, which was later discontinued. They said they had to face a lot of problems while going to their schools and colleges. OC

Youth gets life term for murder

Chandigarh: The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge, Sirsa, Praveen Kumar, on Wednesday sentenced Pawan Kumar (22), a resident of Musli village of Sirsa, to life imprisonment for murder. He was also fined Rs 2 lakh. The case dates back to 2017. According to the prosecution, Dharampal, a resident of Musli village, fled with a girl. Pawan Kumar, the brother of the girl, attacked Dharampal's mother Murti Devi and sister Bichoo Rani with a sharp-edged weapon at their home on August 10, 2017. Bichoo Rani died but Murti Devi survived. On sighting Murti Devi's husband Krishan Kumar and nephew Jagdish, Pawan Kumar ran away from the spot. The court convicted Pawan. As per the judgment, Rs 1 lakh from the fine would be paid to Murti Devi. TNS
