New Delhi: Former Army Chief Gen JJ Singh (retd) on Thursday said he would contest the Lok Sabha election from Ferozepur. He said the political landscape of Punjab needed an urgent transformation as the state had suffered enough at the hands of leaders with vested interests. “I have discussed this with leaders of the Punjab Democratic Alliance, who will take a final call on my candidature,” Singh said. He had resigned from the SAD recently and joined the breakaway faction of AAP led by Sukhpal Khaira. “The Congress government has been a bane for the state and AAP is self-destructing due to infighting. The third front inspires some hope,” he said. TNS

Virasat-e-Khalsa closed till Jan 31

Khaira appoints PAC members

Chandigarh: Punjabi Ekta Party (PEP) chief Sukhpal Singh Khaira, on Thursday made appointments to strengthen the party's base at the grass-roots level. The political affairs committee (PAC) members included: Khaira, Master Baldev Singh, Gurpartap Singh Khushalpur, Deepak Bansal, Daljit Singh Sardarpura, Pargat Singh Majithia, Karamjit Kaur Mansa, Narinder Singh Sandhu, Suresh Sharma and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra.  The party appointed a 31-membered state working panel. Daljit Singh Sardarpura was made incharge of the kisan wing; Davinder Singh Bihla (youth), Navdeep Singh Babbu (SC wing), Gurmeet Singh Aulukh (transport wing) and Inderjit Singh Bhalla (intellectual wing). Akalis seek farmers’ feedback on manifesto

Chandigarh: Participating in the second election manifesto meeting of the SAD here on Thursday, farmer unions highlighted the ground realities as to how farm economy was in doldrums in Punjab because of the “wrong polices” of the Congress government. A party press release said feedback was sought from BKU president Balbir Singh Rajewal and former Mandi Board chairman Ajmer Singh Lakhowal, besides the kisan wing of the SAD. Committee member secretary Daljit Singh Cheema said the feedback was being taken from different sections. TNS

SAD distributes uniform among students

Fazilka: Former minister Bikram Majithia on Thursday distributed uniform among schoolchildren at Old Sivana village of the district. The SAD has initiated a campaign to distribute winter uniform among children after the government failed to do so. “The government has been spending crores of rupees on other projects even as children are facing tough time due to cold,” he said.
