They said these cheques were a major reason for farmer suicides. “The commission agents register false cases against farmers by filling a hefty amount in the blank cheques. This condition of giving a blank cheque while getting a loan should be scrapped and the cheques already given should be returned,” they said. TNS

Four booked for rape

Abohar: A 28-year-old woman filed a complaint at Hanumangarh police station alleging she was kidnapped by four persons, who later raped her in a field. The police registered a case against Janab Ali, Bilal Baksh and Salam Khan of Chak 2RRW village and Allah Baksh of Kikarwali village. The woman was medically examined on Friday. As per her statement, she and her brother were sleeping in their house on Wednesday night when four persons barged into their house, assaulted her brother and kidnapped her.  After villagers came looking for them, the accused fled the scene, leaving behind a motorcycle and a blanket, the woman said in her complaint. oc

‘Illegal’ cinema: Role of officials under lens  

Sangrur: A team  of the Vigilance wing  of the Local Government Department  on Friday started investigations to ascertain the role of officers of the Sangrur Nagar Council (NC) in allowing the construction of a  mini cinema building on the Red Cross (RC) land without the passing of building plans. The Tribune had highlighted the issue on January 15 and local government minister Navjot Sidhu  had ordered an inquiry. A prominent businessman has taken the RC land on lease, but both the NC and the RC are unwilling to share the details of lessee. TNS

30-year-old killed as bus hits car

Ropar: A 30-year-old man was killed when a bus hit the car he was travelling in near Baruwal village on the Kiratpur Sahib-Manali road near Kirtapur Sahib here on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as Vishavpreet Singh of Mangewal village. The incident took place when Vishavpreet was returning from a marriage function at Hikna village in his Alto car along with his friend. TNS

SGPC to hold nagar kirtan in Odisha today

Amritsar: The dharam prachar committee of the SGPC is all set to hold a two-day nagar kirtan from Puri to Cuttack in Odisha from Saturday.  It will be a part of the 550th Gurpurab celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev as he had visited Puri during one of his 'udasis'. Committee secretary Balwinder Singh said the nagar kirtan would commence from the historic Gurdwara Baoli Sahib in Puri. TNS

Langar for patients, attendants at AIIMS 

Amritsar: The Gurdwara Sri Hemkunt Sahib Management Trust is all set to commence 'langar' for patients and their companions at AIIMS, Rishikesh, from January 26. The Trust was approached by the administration of AIIMS to provide community kitchen to patients and their relatives, said Trust vice-president Narinderjit Singh Bindra. He said Ravi Kant, director, AIIMS, Rishikesh, had also appealed to the gurdwara Trust for the purpose. TNS

Rs 6.66 crore relief for cancer patients

Fatehgarh Sahib:The state government is committed to give better health facilities to the people and the Capt Amarinder Singh-led government has initiated various steps in this regard, said MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra, while distributing financial aid to cancer patients here on Friday. He said the district health department had distributed Rs 6.66 crore among 670 cancer patients from the district for treatment from the Chief Minister Cancer Relief Fund. OC

Employees found absent from duty  

Fatehgarh Sahib: Shiv Dular Singh Dhillon, DC, directed the  SDM to conduct surprise checking of various offices falling in the subdivision. SDM Dr Sanjiv Kumar conducted surprise checking at the MC office, Sirhind, where three employees were found absent, seven were found absent at the Block Development and Panchayat Office, five at the water supply and sanitation office and one employee was found absent at the tehsil office. Rs 300 cr to be disbursed for scholarships  

Chandigarh: The state government's decision to disburse the post-matric scholarship amount to unaided colleges for the period the student has studied in any institute has paved the way for the disbursal of Rs 300 crore, pending for the last few years. An announcement to release the payment was shared with a delegation of the Joint Action Committee of Unaided Colleges of Punjab, that on Friday called upon the CM and the Social Welfare Minister.
