Mandi Ahmedgarh: The management committee of Anand Isher Public Senior Secondary School, Chhapar, felicitated students of the school, who had brought laurels to the institute by winning 26 medals in the recently held Ludhiana Sahodya Athletics Meet and Football Tournament. Director Kartar Singh said Gurleen Kaur of the school was declared the best athlete of the meet and the school team was declared the overall champion in athletics in the Under-14 category. The Under-17 category remained the runners-up. The school team in Under-19 football was declared the winner.

Amandeep fastest runner

Amandeep Kaur and Harashpreet Singh were declared fastest runners during the annual athletics meet of Good Earth Public School, Sihar, which concluded on Tuesday. Prof Amarjit Singh Sidhu, chairman of the school, presided over the concluding session and Balvir Singh Grewal, former captain of the Indian hockey team, was the chief guest. Pardeep Sethi, Gurmukh Singh Pandher and Manav Karir gave away prizes to the winners. Sidhu and Grewal called upon students to adopt sportsmanship as an element of lifestyle. Sutlej House, which won the relay race, was declared the overall winner. Manraj Singh Gill, Lovinder Singh, Harkaranvir Singh, Invir Singh and Karanpreet Singh emerged winners in 200-m race, javelin throw, shot put, long jump and discus throw, respectively, in the boys’ category. Jashandeep Kaur Gill, Resham, Harleen Kaur, Amandeep Kaur and Gurpreet Kaur emerged winners in the girls’ category. — OC

Tailor killed in bike-van collision

Ludhiana: A 48-year-old man was killed on Monday night after his bike was hit by a school van near Dugri Bridge. The deceased has been identified as Karamjit Singh, a resident of the PAU complex. The police said Karamjit was a tailor by profession. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Ishant (17) and Prince (13). Around 9.30 pm, while he was returning home on his bike, he collided head-on with a school van. Residents nabbed the van driver and handed him over to the police. Karamjit’s kin alleged that the van driver was under the influence of liquor, but the police denied. A case under Section 304 A, IPC, has been registered against the driver. TNS

Two booked for employing kids

Ludhiana: The police have booked two shopkeepers for employing children at their places. They have been identified as Gagandeep Singh, owner of Gagan Steel and Tool, and Anand Kumar, owner of Dinesh Chat Bhandar. They have been booked under Section 3-A and 14 of the Child Labour Prohibition and Regulation Act, 1986. Labour Inspector Harbhajan Singh said acting on a tip-off, a raid was conducted at the shops where two children below 18 were found working. TNS

2 cases of dowry harassment 

Ludhiana: The women police station registered two dowry harassment cases. In the first case, the police on the complaint of Parvinder Kaur of Satguru Nagar have booked her husband Rajwinder Singh, mother-in-law Jaswant Kaur and father-in-law Joginder Singh, all residents of Karnal. In the second case, on the complaint of Gurjeeb Kaur of Dhandari Kalan, the police have booked her husband Kamaljit Singh of Lohara on the charge of dowry harassment. The accused are yet to be arrested. TNS
