KOLKATA: The Indian Coast Guard has saved the life of a Chinese sailor who fell ill in the high seas on Saturday. The Coast Guard base at Haldia near Kolkata received a message for immediate medical evacuation of a crewmember on board Panama-registered merchant vessel Yan Dun Jiao-1. The ship was about 100 km into the sea, south of Sagar island. Dusk had already set in when the ship reported that the crewmember had been vomiting continuously and was suffering from severe pain in the abdomen. The Martime Rescue Sub Centre at Haldia swung into action and diverted Coast Guard ship Raziya Sultana, which was patrolling the neighbourhood, for his medical evacuation. An interceptor boat dispatched from Haldia then got the patient back on the shore. TNS

Centre restores spices for troops, reduces quantum

New Delhi: Ending a six-month stalemate, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has resumed the payment made to buy condiments (spices) used in cooking food for troops of the armed forces. The MoD, in its February 1 letter, has said the payment of "condiment allowance" will be under new budgetary head and will be payable from July 1, 2017, the day it had stopped this allowance citing the 7th Central Pay Commission recommendations. The allowance has, however, been reduced from Rs 103 per man per month to Rs 89.78, as per the fresh instructions. The stopping of the allowance meant the field units of the armed forces were getting rations as mandated but were not getting spices - salts, masala, etc - needed to cook a meal like dal, kadhi, rajmah, vegetables or chicken.
