BJP candidate from Kangra Kishan Kapoor met the Dalai Lama yesterday to seek his blessings and Tibetans’ support. Those with Indian citizenship can participate in the electoral process.

Lobsang Wangyal, who is famous for organising the Miss Tibet contest, has an Indian voter. He said he was excited to exercise his franchise.

“During the last parliamentary elections, I had cast my vote at the Baghsunag polling booth,” Lobsang said. His request for Indian citizenship was accepted in 2014. “I was issued a voter slip and now, I have a voter identity card also,” he added. Before accepting the citizenship, he was a refugee and did not have any state.

“Still, many Tibetans feel that their movement for freedom will be compromised in case they take Indian citizenship. This is not correct. In India also, people belong to various states and have Indian citizenship. Similarly, we will be able to maintain a link with our Tibetan roots even after taking up Indian citizenship. Tenzing Norbu, another Tibetan with Indian citizenship, said she would cast vote in the parliamentary elections. “We are very thankful to the Government of India for providing us voting rights and Indian citizenship. It will ease the life of women,” she said. As per the information, 170 Tibetans from McLeodganj are registered as voters for the Lok Sabha poll. During the last parliamentary poll, 133 Tibetans had cast their vote. In Kangra, about 217 Tibetans are registered voters.

Tibetans born in India between 1950 and 1987 were allowed Indian citizenship by the Supreme Court as per the Indian Citizenship Act. Though there are about 15,000 registered Tibetan refugees staying at various places in Kangra district, only 217 are registered voters.
