Bid to gherao minister Dhankar’s residence

Sanitary workers, under the aegis of the Gramin Safai Karamchari Union, on Sunday took out a protest march here and tried to gherao the residence of Rural Development and Panchayat Minister OP Dhankar. The attempt was foiled by the police.

Vinod Kumar, general secretary of the association, said over 11,000 sanitation workers were employed in villages across the state on a contractual basis at the remuneration of Rs 10,000 per month, while their counterparts in the urban areas were being given Rs 16,900. He said the workload in rural areas was much higher than the urban areas, hence a remuneration of Rs 18,000 should be given to them.

“Our delegation has met Dhankar regarding the issue thrice, but to no avail,” he said.
