Better goal average helps bankers reach last four

Punjab & Sind Bank, Delhi, were held to a 3-3 draw by Indian Railways during the 36th Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Tournament here on Thursday. However, the bankers made it to the semifinals on the basis of a better goal average. Both teams had three points in three matches. In the semifinals, Army XI will take on Punjab & Sind Bank, Delhi, while Indian Oil will play against Punjab Police.

In the last league match of Pool B, Indian Railways and Punjab & Sind Bank played attacking hockey. In the fourth minute, Indian Railways opened their account with the help of a field goal scored by Pardeep Singh Sandhu.

In the 27th minute, Indian Railway’s Kujun Topno helped his team take a 2-0 lead. At the half time, Indian Railways were leading 2-0. In the 33rd minute, the bankers reduced the lead 1-2 with the help of Jaskaran Singh’s goal.

In the 49th minute, Satbir Singh of Punjab & Sind Bank scored an equaliser by converting a pass received from Gautampal Singh into a goal. In the 51st minute, Indian Railways took a 3-2 lead when Pardeep Singh Sandhu netted the ball. In the 57th minute, the bankers made a comeback and Harmanjit Singh scored a goal for his team, making it 3-3. With the draw, both teams earned a point each.

In the last league match of Pool A, ONGC Delhi and Indian Navy, Mumbai, settled for a 2-2 draw. ONGC took a lead in the 22nd minute with converting a penalty corner into a goal by Jagwant Singh. In the 30th and 36th minute, Indian Navy’s Pawan Rajbhar scored two goals to get a 2-1 lead. In the 41st minute, ONGC’s Amanpreet Singh scored an equaliser, making it 2-2. Both teams failed to qualify for the semifinals. — TNS
