A beggar allegedly killed another beggar here on Saturday evening by hitting him on the head with a brick after an argument over a peg of liquor.

The accused, identified as Dhan Singh of Jagadhri, was overpowered by shopkeepers and handed over to the police.

Vipin Jain, running a shop near the railway station, told the police that after work, beggars assembled near the old fountain chowk every day and slept in front of the shops.

He said two beggars had a quarrel around 8 pm on Saturday when one of them picked a brick and hit the other on the head. The injured beggar was taken to civil hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

Sources said the two beggars were consuming liquor and they had a quarrel when the victim had an extra peg of liquor. The accused tried to escape after committing the crime, but he was overpowered by shopkeepers and passersby, who handed him over to the police.

Murder accused found hanging in jail

Sonepat: A murder accused in judicial custody was found hanging from an iron rod in his barrack at the local district jail on Sunday. After postmortem, the body of Surender (43), a resident of Khanpur Kalan village, was handed over to his family members and on the statement of Deputy Superintendent of the jail Ram Chander, a case of suicide had been registered.
