The District Health Department organised an awareness rally on Tuesday to apprise people of the symptoms and treatment of leprosy. The rally was flagged off by district leprosy officer Dr Nidhi Sharma from Urban Primary Health Centre, Bhagatawala.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Nidhi said that people should take discoloured skin patches which were insensitive to heat and cold seriously as these could be the symptoms of leprosy.
She said physical disabilities due to leprosy can easily be avoided if the medication was started at the earliest. She said, “Mdicines for leprosy patients are provided free of cost at government health facilities.”
In case a leprosy patients leaves medicine midway without completing the course he or she is potential threat to others as the disease could be communicated, she added.
Employees of the Health Department and area residents participated in the rally by carrying placards with information about symptoms, causes and treatment of the disease.
