Two Army personnel were killed today after an avalanche hit a patrol team at an altitude of about 18,000 feet in southern Siachen glacier in the Union Territory of Ladakh, defence spokesperson Col Rajesh Kalia said in a statement.
He said a rescue team rushed to the site and pulled out all members of the patrol. Army helicopters were simultaneously pressed into service to evacuate the victims. However, two Army personnel perished in the avalanche. It is the second time in two weeks that an avalanche has occurred in Siachen.
On November 18, four Army personnel and two porters were killed in the northern part of Siachen Glacier. — PTI
