Autonomy must for growth of education, says ex-UGC head

JAMMU: Former chairman of the University Grants Commission Prof Ved Prakash on Monday said autonomy was crucial for the growth and development of higher education.

Former chairman of the University Grants Commission Prof Ved Prakash on Monday said autonomy was crucial for the growth and development of higher education.

He was speaking at the inaugural of the University of Jammu’s lecture series under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan in collaboration with the Human Resource Development Centre of the university here on Monday. The former UGC chairman said the country had got freedom in 1947, but the first national policy on education had come in 1985. He said in the era of technology, things were changing fast and country needed new inclusive national policy on education.

He talked about the evolution of access to education and called on the young faculty to make the utmost use of information technology to make learning more fruitful and affordable to everyone. — TNS
