The police have registered a case under Sections 148, 149, 323, 379-B, 427 and 307 of the IPC and Sections 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act against the youths who had attacked state INSO president Pradeep Deswal on Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) campus here on Friday.

While the INSO leader and his companions have alleged that the attackers were associated with the Congress student wing NSUI, the NSUI leaders have rubbished the allegations, stating that their union had nothing to do with the attack.

“It was some personal matter involving Deswal and some other students and the NSUI has nothing to do with it. The names of our union and state Congress leaders are being dragged into the matter to politicise it and tarnish our image,” said Pradeep Ghanghas, general secretary of the Haryana unit of the NSUI.

Asked whether the persons named in the FIR were members of the NSUI, Ghanghas maintained that none of them was office-bearers of their union and he did not know if they were primary members of the union.

In the complaint lodged with the police, Deswal has alleged that Sushil Hooda, Pradeep and their companions had passed indecent remarks against some girl students of the university and he had asked them not to do so around two months ago.

He said Sushil and Pradeep, along with their 30/40 companions, including Sumit, alias Sago, and Naveen, shot at him and attacked him with rods, batons and hockey-sticks etc on the university campus yesterday.

Deswal alleged that the attackers also snatched the revolver of his brother Anil.

SHO (PGIMS) Inspector Garima said raiding teams had been constituted to nab the attackers, though no arrests had been made till the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, local lawyers kept work suspended against the attack on Deswal, who is also a member of the bar association.
