The Jammu and Kashmir Police have solved an ATM robbery case within 48 hours of the theft and arrested six accused from Samba and Kathua districts.
Of the six accused, five are from south Kashmir whereas one is from Haryana.
Addressing a press conference on Sunday, Jammu SSP Tejinder Singh said two days back, a J&K Bank ATM was stolen from the Kanachak area on the outskirts of Jammu. “The ATM was recovered and according to the bank, Rs 10.9 lakh was stolen from it,” he said.
The SSP said working on some leads, the police got information about the accused. “The Jammu police got in touch with the Samba and Kathua police and zeroed in on the suspects and laid check posts to arrest them. All the six suspects were arrested on Saturday and Rs 8.70-lakh stolen money was recovered from them,” the SSP said.
The accused have been identified as Mehraj Din and Omar Malik of Shopian, Junaid Bashir, Amir Hussain and Amir Bashir of Kulgam and Mohammad Yousuf of Nuh, Haryana.
He said they were in contact with the police in Kashmir to check their antecedents and know whether there is any militancy angle or not.
Tejinder Singh asked people of the winter capital to remain alert towards rising theft cases and install CCTV cameras outside their homes.
