The state’s summer capital recorded one of the freezing night of the season as mercury dropped to -2.4°C overnight while the minimum temperature across the Kashmir valley dropped several degrees below freezing point.
The overnight temperature in the city recorded one of its lowest drops of the recent weeks as autumnal snowfall last month has marked an early arrival of winter in the Kashmir region.
The minimum temperature of -2.4°C was the lowest in recent weeks and marked the coldest night yet of the season, an official of Meteorological Centre said.
The coldest night temperature overnight was recorded in Pahalgam in south Kashmir where the mercury plunged to -5.1°C which was two degrees below the normal, the official said.
In Gulmarg ski resort, which is covered in a thick layer of snow, the minimum temperature was recorded at 3.4 °C.
The minimum temperature in the southern gateway town of Qazigund was recorded at -1.8°C while the minimum temperature in frontier Kupwara town was recorded at -2.4°C.
The minimum temperature settled below the freezing point across the Ladakh region.
Leh, in Ladakh region of the state, recorded a low of minus 9.3 degrees Celsius, while nearby Kargil registered a minimum of minus 9 degrees Celsius.
The forecast over the next several days suggests that the sky over most of the Valley will remain cloudy and hazy while night temperatures will remain below freezing point.
