Batala, January 15

The local police today arrested the son of an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) for sacrilege at a gurdwara in Dhoopsari village, 10 km from here.

The accused has been identified as Ashish Powar, son of ASI Anil Powar, who is working in the SSP office.

SSP Opinderjit Singh Ghuman said last night Tarsem Singh, a watchman at Gurdwara Baba Jorawar Singh, heard some voices from the premises, following which he conducted a search.

“He saw a youth fleeing towards fields after scaling a wall. He informed fellow villagers, who launched a hunt for the youth in and around the village. This morning villagers found the youth lying in an inebriated condition in a marriage palace located adjacent to the gurdwara,” said the SSP.

Ghuman said the CCTV footage showed the youth trying to break open the lock of the ‘golak’.

“A close scrutiny showed the youth was trying to run away with Guru Granth Sahib. A case under Sections 295-A and 379 of the IPC has been registered against Ashish,” the SSP said. — TNS
