Ambala, July 3

Over 5,000 farmers held a demonstration in front of a private sugar mill at Naraingarh in the district on Monday against non-payment of arrears.

The aggrieved farmers raised slogans against the management of Naraingarh Sugar Mills Ltd for not making due payments to them since January and threatened to intensify the stir if the arrears are not cleared forthwith.

Naraingarh Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Aditi reached the spot and called the mill management to meet the agitating peasants. During the course of the meeting, the mill management sought three more weeks to clear the payments. On an assurance by the SDM, the protesting farmers lifted the dharna and agreed to call off their agitation till July 22.
