Manjit Kaur, a Class XII student of Government Senior Secondary School, Bada Gaon, Ambala, was the star of the day when the district administration honoured her in the school. She has topped Ambala district by securing 93.4 per cent marks in the commerce stream in the Class XII examinations conducted by the Board of School Education Haryana this year.

District Education Officer (DEO) Uma Sharma, accompanied by other administration officials, offered sweets and gifts to Manjit and appreciated her achievement.

Manjit is among those students who are being honoured by the district administration for achieving top 10 positions in the district in the Class XII and X examinations.

Priya, a Class X student of Bada Gaon school, was also felicitated at a special function for standing first in the school by securing 91 per cent marks in the recent examinations.

Another Class XII student of this government school is among in the top 10 position holders in the district this year. The school secured 98.38 pass percentage. While its pass percentage in 10 subjects was 100 per cent, 19 students scored over 80 per cent marks.

Similarly, the pass percentage in the Class X examinations was 81.93 per cent this year. Last year also, Kajal Kaur, a Class XII student of commerce, had topped the district.

The DEO says that the department has launched a special programme to honour meritorious students and teachers of government schools for securing excellent results in the Class X and XII examinations.

“Our idea is to honour performers and at the same time, motivate fellow students and teachers to perform well in future,” says Uma.

She adds that under the initiative, district administration officials are visiting government schools and interacting with students and teachers. “Besides felicitating the achievers, we are also asking students and teachers to share their problems and demands with us so that these are addressed,” says the DEO. The campaign is successful as both students and teachers are coming forward with their grievances and suggestions for the improvement of their institutions.

Uma says that during school visits, they also check cleanliness and the condition of basic amenities on the premises. “We urge students and staff members to keep their schools clean and green by planting trees and undertaking cleanliness drives at regular intervals,” she adds.

School principal Anil Gupta says that district officials’ visit boosts the morale of students and teachers and also help in the redress of local issues. “Honouring of meritorious students and teachers is spreading zeal among other students and teachers to perform well and bag the honour next time,” he adds.
