Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday gave its support to Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) candidate Digvijay Chautala in Jind, where an assembly by-election is scheduled for January 28.

AAP’s Rajya Sabha member Sushil Kumar Gupta said his party would campaign for Chautala—who’s the younger son of Ajay Chautala—including door-to-door campaigns.

Speaking to the press at Jind, Gupta said political parties such as the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Congress and the Indian National Lok Dal had “divided the people of Haryana” on the basis of religion, caste and creed. Corruption meanwhile has assumed alarming proportions in the state, he said.

When The Tribune asked him over the phone if AAP’s support to JJP meant the two parties would work together for Lok Sabha elections that are just months away, Gupta remained non-committal, saying for now the support was for the by-election only.

Gupta said the party had decided to support the JJP of the “similarities in their ideologies”, adding that both parties wanted to “save” Haryana from grips of nepotism, casteism, corruption and religious politics.
