Jammu, October 5

In a significant development, the Jammu and Kashmir Government today allowed a delegation of the National Conference (NC) from Jammu province to meet party president Farooq Abdullah and vice-president Omar Abdullah, who are currently under detention.

This is for the first time since August 5, the day the Government of India revoked the J&K’s special status, when the government has allowed the leaders of a political party to meet their detained leaders in Kashmir Valley. So far, the political leaders were allowed to meet detained leaders in Kashmir only on the directions of the Supreme Court.

According to a spokesperson of the NC, the government conveyed permission to the request made by the party’s provincial president Devender Singh Rana to Governor Satya Pal Malik on Thursday last evening.

The decision to meet Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah had been taken at an emergency meeting of the senior functionaries and district presidents of the Jammu province on October 3, soon after restrictions on the movement of Jammu-based NC leaders had been lifted.

“The delegation, led by provincial president Devender Singh Rana and comprising former party legislators, will leave by Indigo flight from Jammu tomorrow, October 6, in the morning and will return to Jammu by evening,” the NC spokesperson said.

According to the party sources, Jammu leaders will discuss the prevailing political situation in J&K with the top leadership of the party and chalk out the future course of action. The party leaders may also hold discussions on the BDC polls. Farooq, Omar Abdullah and scores of other NC leaders in the Kashmir Valley had been detained on August 4, while restrictions were imposed on the movement of prominent party leaders in the Jammu province. However, the restrictions on the Jammu-based leaders were lifted on the evening of Wednesday. — TNS
