Chandigarh, April 2

The World Cup is not won every day, and when MS Dhoni hit Nuwan Kulasekara for a six over long on to complete a successful run chase on this day in 2011 to help India regain the illustrious trophy after a gap of 28 years it was a moment to savour for over 32,000 fans present at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and the entire nation.

“2nd of April, 2011... I honestly don’t know where I should start, what all I should say and where I should stop. It was the biggest day of my life,” Sachin Tendulkar said in a video message on the eighth anniversary of India’s 2011 World Cup triumph.

Chasing Sri Lanka's total of 274/6, India reached home in the 49th over, courtesy Gautam Gambhir’s 97 and a feisty 79-ball 91 by skipper Dhoni.  “In the end, what matters is that the trophy is sitting in your dressing room and not in the opposition’s dressing room and that happened to us,” Tendulkar told the ICC website.

India first won the World Cup in June 1983 under Kapil Dev after beating West Indies. In September 2007, Dhoni led India to the World T20 title and in 2011 he guided the side to another World Cup triumph. The three victories are represented by an equal number of stars on the BCCI logo and Tendulkar wished one more star would be added to the emblem when Virat Kohli’s men travel to England next month. “The next World Cup is here. Our World Cup team hasn’t been announced, but whoever goes there (England) is our team,” said Tendulkar. “If you carefully look at the BCCI logo on our India jersey, you can spot three stars on top of the logo, they represent three World Cups. Three stars should turn into four. That’s what I want,” wished the iconic cricketer.
