Amritsar, February 10

The Amritsar (Rural) police have booked seven persons on the charge of attempt to murder.

The police said the accused had fired at members of their rival group following a dispute at Teda Rajputa village falling under the Ajnala police station here on Saturday evening.

The accused have been identified as Kulwinder Singh, his wife Baljinder Kaur, son Vishwadeep Singh, Kanwarpal Singh, Amarjit Singh and Jaspinderjit Singh. However, one of the accused is yet to be identified. They reportedly belonged to the SAD while the complainant is associated with the Congress.

The complainant, Lakhbir Singh (71), told the police that his elder son Baljinder Singh was at his shop of electricity equipment in Ajnala and in the evening, the accused had attacked him and his son with sticks and sharp weapons.

He said Baljinder Kaur was shouting to teach him a lesson for contesting the Panchayat polls against them. The complainant said he raised an alarm and called locals. When they started gathering near the spot, the accused fled away, he added.

Lakhbir said he was taking his son to the Civil Hospital in Ajnala and when they reached near a tubewell room in the fields that belong to Kulwinder Singh, they fired gunshots from the rooftops of their residence.

He said the accused fried around 10 gunshots. He added that though they had a narrow escape in the firing, a bullet hit Gurmit Singh, who was standing behind them.

Paramjit Singh, Station House Officer (SHO), Ajnala police station, said a case under Sections 307, 452, 323, 148 and 149 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act had been registered against the accused.
