Chandigarh, August 27

On the last day of the fourth counselling, huge rush was witnessed at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10, here today.

A total of 582 Class XI seats have been filled now, in addition to the 11,065 seats which were filled in the last three counsellings. To accommodate the increasing number of Class XI admission seekers in government schools, the Education Department is in talks with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to seek exemption regarding the affiliation clause that restricts 40 students per section.

The clause 4.8 of the affiliation by-laws mandates that the maximum number of students shall be 40 in each section. The rule says that there should be an availability of one square metre built-up floor area per child in classrooms in the absolute necessity of the school. It is due to the rising enrolment numbers that several government schools operate in double shifts.

Now, with 15 per cent increase in seats per section, the pupil teacher ratio will aggravate further. The Education Department had earlier decided not to increase the seats keeping in mind the affiliation by-laws. Unlike last year, wherein seven counselling rounds were conducted, the department had decided that only three counselling rounds will be conducted so that students’ studies do not suffer. After 1,700 students, who did not get admission to any school thronged the department, it was decided that fourth counselling will be conducted.
