50 attend patient caregivers meet

The 10th Caregivers Meet was organised by the Manas Foundation here on Monday. Manas Foundation is a non-profit organisation established by Dr Rajeev Gupta, a practicing psychiatrist. As many as 50 caregivers/family members of chronic psychiatric patients participated in the event.

Dr Sandeep Grover, Professor of Psychiatry, PGI, Chandigarh, was the chief guest on the occasion. Dr Anshul Mahajan, consultant psychiatrist, Manas Clinic, was also present in the event.

While addressing participants Dr Gupta highlighted the motive of “Manas Foundation” as a common platform for all caregivers, whose family members were suffering from psychiatric disorder. “Taking care of a psychiatric patient is really painful experience. This organisation attempts to support and create social network for family members so that they can share their experiences and get help,” he added.

Experts answered queries of participants during an open question-answers session held during the programme. Various issues, including nature, symptoms, causes, preventiong, role of family, counselling, relapse of illness and management were discussed.

Feedback and suggestions were also given by caregivers. Dr Sandeep Grover gave informative tips on stress management and how to avoid care giving burnout in families. Dr Anshul Mahajan discussed the role of yoga, meditation, exercise, diet and avoidance of drugs for the prevention of mental illnesses.
