Jammu, October 1

The Directorate of School Education, Jammu, has granted extension of recognition for five years to 12 private schools in Jammu division.

The permission was granted only after inspections verified that these schools had fulfilled all norms.

Sources said of the 12 private schools, five were from Jammu district, two each from Kathua and Rajouri, and one each from Reasi and Doda districts, respectively. They said over 100 private schools were considered for the extension but only 12 got sanction.

All 12 schools were given extension up to 5 years till March 2024. After that, the authorities will again inspect and fresh permission for the extension of recognition be granted.

In 2018, the school education directorate had decided to tighten the noose around private schools for not fulfilling the requisite criteria/formalities despite serving numerous reminders.

As a result, around 284 private schools operating within Jammu municipal limits were closed for not adhering to three essential criteria — fire, building and lab chemical safety norms. Of the 284 schools, 161 were in Jammu zone followed by Gandhi Nagar zone (101) and Satwari zone (22). — TNS
