The local police have arrested a 45-year old son of an elderly couple, whose decomposed bodies were found in the north choe at Mullanpur near the Siswan temple in the district over four months ago.

The suspect has been identified as Rajneesh Kumar, a resident of Sector 45, Chandigarh, who runs a cab business and owns four cabs. He was produced in a local court, which remanded him in three-day police custody.

According to the police, Rajneesh and his wife had regular arguments with the victims and had lodged at least 12 complaints against each other at the Sector 34 police station. Rajneesh’s wife had even got a case of sexual harassment registered against the victims. In September 2018, they again had an argument following which Rajneesh strangled his parents and dumped their bodies in a choe. He also placed his father’s Activa scooter near the choe to make it look like an accident.

The decomposed bodies of the victims, Rajinder Kumar Bohra (72), a former inspector with the Punjab Roadways, and his wife Asha Rani (70) were found dumped in the choe near the Siswan temple near Mullanpur on the Chandigarh-Baddi highway on September 30. Earlier, the police took it as an accident case and started inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC.

However, they later registered a case of murder after the postmortem report revealed that the victims had not received any injuries by falling into the choe. Besides, the scooter found near the site was also not damaged.

Rajesh Asteer, SHO of the Mullanpur police station, said Rajneesh had strangled his father Rajinder Kumar and mother Asha Rani and then dumped their bodies in the choe. He said the suspect was on the run for the past over four months and they had arrested him from Pathankot. He said the role of the suspect’s wife had not been established in the murder so far and investigations were on.
