Three-year-old Pardeep fell into a borewell 25 feet deep in Kidian Gandial Meera village of Kathua district in J&K on the border with Punjab late Thursday evening, but was rescued by neighbours.

The child, who suffered two fractures in his leg, is recuperating in a hospital in Sarna, 5 km from here. Deputy Commissioner Ramvir paid him a visit this morning.

The boy’s father said his sons Pardeep and Geru went to a confectionery shop near their house last evening. “When they were returning, Pardeep inadvertently stepped on a tarpaulin sheet spread over a freshly dug borewell. Geru rushed home for help.

“A neighbour volunteered to go inside the pit while tying himself with a rope, one end of which was held by villagers. Slowly and steadily, he made his way in and was out after 15 minutes along with Pardeep,” he said.

Earlier this week, Fatehveer Singh (2) died after falling into a borewell in Sangrur.
