Three unidentified car-borne miscreants made an attempt to forcibly take away a Fortuner vehicle from a Mohali resident around 10.30 pm last night by injuring the victim with a knife and firing gunshots into the air.

The injured, Vir Inder Pal Singh, a resident of Mohali and retired Indian Air Force official, has been admitted to Max Hospital in Mohali.

He told the police that after his retirement in 2015, he opened an office dealing with IELTS and study visa in Kurali. Last night, around 9.45 pm, he left for Mohali in his Fortuner (PB 65R 9906) from Kurali. He parked his vehicle on the Kharar-Mohali road around 500 metres away from the Kharar bus stand and alighted from it to answer nature’s call.

As he sat in the car, two miscreants, believed to be around 30 years old, came there and asked him to hand over the keys of the car to them. He said one of them was carrying a pistol in his hand, while the other had a knife. They were speaking in Hindi. The youth carrying the pistol threatened that they would kill him if he failed to hand over the keys to him.

The complainant got down from the vehicle and resisted their attempt. At this, the suspect carrying the pistol fired shots into the air. The victim was thrashed by the suspects. One of them sat on the driver’s seat and tried to start the vehicle.

The complainant somehow caught hold of the pistol. At this, the suspect fired two more shots, which hit the vehicle.

Meanwhile, the youth carrying the knife attacked the complainant on the right leg. After this, the three suspects managed to escape in their white car towards the Kharar bus stand.

The victim informed his friends and he himself drove to Max Hospital in Mohali where he is under treatment.

The SHO of the Kharar City police station, Inspector Bhagwant Singh, said they had registered a case under Sections 394 and 34 of the IPC and under the  Arms Act against the three miscreants. The police have recovered empty cartridges and a live cartridges from the spot.

He said the police were trying to get footage of CCTV cameras installed on the road.
