Kathua, September 12

Three Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) militants were arrested along with arms and ammunition, including six AK rifles, at Lakhanpur in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir today, a senior police officer said.

Following inputs, the police intercepted a truck (JK13E 2000) carrying grocery goods  in Lakhanpur and found the arms hidden in a bag inside the truck’s cabin.

The consignment, said sources, was handed over to the militants, all residents of Kashmir, by a Pakistani handler in Batalaa, Punjab.

Speaking to the media, Kathua SSP Shridar Patil said the truck was on its way to Kashmir from Bamyal area of Pathankot in Punjab. “On questioning, the arrested persons admitted they were associated with Jaish-e-Mohammed,” he said.

Patil, however, didn’t reply to a query on the origin of the ammunition and who sent it, saying it was a matter of investigation. “It is believed that one of these militants, with the help of over-ground workers, infiltrated from across the border via Bamyal (in Pathankot),” he said.

The arms and ammunition recovered included four AK-56 rifles, two AK-47 rifles, six magazines and 180 rounds of ammunition, besides a cash of Rs 11,000, the SSP said.

Sources, however, claimed the truck started for Kashmir from Delhi, but the arrested persons diverted it to Amritsar from where they were travelling to Jammu through Gurdaspur route. “Their Pakistani handler, believed to be a Kashmir resident, handed over the bag with arms and ammunition to the militants near Batala,” said sources.

The militants have been identified as Ubaid-ul-Islam and Sabeel Ahmad Baba of Aghlar Kandi in Rajpora, Pulwama, and Jehangir Ahmad Parray of Pakherpora Charar-e-Sharief in Budgam.

A case has been registered against the trio, who were sent to seven-day police remand after being produced before a local magistrate.
