20-year-old held for grandparents’ murder in Kathua

KATHUA: An elderly couple was brutally murdered in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua on Saturday. Chand Kumar (82) and his wife Sanjogta(75) were allegedly assaulted by their 20-year-old grandson Sahil.

Jammu and Kashmir Police arrested a man on charges of having murdered his grandparents in Kathua, officials said on Saturday.

The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Sahil, is suspected to have used a blunt object to kill the couple, 82-year-old Chand Ram his 75-year-old wife Sanjogta Devi.

Police claim preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect, who was employed as a carpenter in Manali in Hamachal Pradesh and came home only last week, may have been mentally unwell, but quickly added it was too soon to tell. Sources in the family meanwhile claim that the suspect had tried to attack his family.

Police said that the couple’s bodies had been handed over to the family after autopsy.
