Rohtak, February 22

The CIA wing of Rohtak police today arrested two national-level judo players and a woman from Haridwar for allegedly murdering a local trader.  SP Jashandeep Singh Randhawa said Ramesh Puniyani went missing on February 17 and his body was found in a canal two days later.

The case was handed over to the CIA wing led by Inspector Bijender Bhandari. It was found that Puniyani  had visited a local hotel with a woman, identified as Jyoti, 20, from Shamli in UP.

Mother of a young child, she had strained ties with her husband and had been living with her sister at Azadgarh in Rohtak for the past four months. The SP said Jyoti came in contact with Happy alias Sunny (19) of Madina village, a national-level judo player. The two had an affair. Later, she also started seeing Puniyani. An unhappy Happy confided in his friend Deekshant, alias Kaku (18), also a judo player.

“Happy, Deekshant and Jyoti hatched a conspiracy. Jyoti called Puniyani on February 17, who took her to a hotel. At about 7 pm, she asked Puniyani to drop her near a stadium. Happy and Deekshant were already waiting there. They hit Puniyani with a baton, took away his gold chain, bracelet, rings and wallet containing Rs 60,000 and threw him into a canal,” the SP said.

The following day, the three left for Delhi and then boarded a train for Haridwar, where they were nabbed. — TNS
