Bathinda, February 6

The Municipal Corporation Bathinda (MCB) has 18 items on its agenda for the meeting of the Finance and Contract Committee to be held on Thursday.

The meeting, to be presided over by Mayor Balwant Rai Nath, is expected to be important as several developmental projects may be given the green signal.

The tenders for the supply of streetlight maintenance material, at an estimated cost of Rs 49.89 lakh, installing traffic lights at Maheshwari chowk at an estimated cost of Rs 9.81 lakh, laying of interlocking tiles in Paras Ram Nagar at Rs 10.95 lakh, laying of PC in ward number 15 at Rs 10.36 lakh and supply and erection of streetlight points in Partap Nagar and other areas would be taken up in the meeting.

Apart from these, the tenders for constructing manholes in Paras Ram Nagar at a cost of Rs 7.50 lakh, supply and fixation of informatory boards in the city at a cost of Rs 12.60 lakh and strengthening of sullage carrier from STP to Lasara drain at a cost of 16.15 lakh would also be taken up for approval.

Another major project which would be tabled in the meeting is floating of tenders for the purchase of 46 primary collection vehicles.

It is pertinent to mention that MCB has already planned to start door-to-door garbage collection on contract basis in the city and now it is purchasing its own collection vehicles with the grant received from the Union Government under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

After JITF Company pulled out of the door-to-door garbage collection in the city, the MCB took the work in its own hands. The civic body also plans to make the city bin free.

Under the project, the corporation plans to buy mini-tippers to collect garbage from households and transport it directly to the solid waste plant. It has already got a nod for the same in the General House meeting held in September and the MCB will allot the tender in the Thursday meeting.

The corporation would give the new vehicles to a contractor to run and maintain. Instead of giving all new vehicles to one contractor, the MCB has planned to give the work to four contractors zone-wise.

As per the MCB, there are 52,000 domestic active waste generator units in the city, of which 5,000 units are in a densely populated area.
